The Ferry at the Heart of the Town
Travellers crossed the lower Tamar by ferry at Saltash for many centuries. The crossing point was the reason that Saltash began to grow here and the ferry service continued until it was replaced by the suspension bridge in October 1961.
This website aims to keep alive knowledge and appreciation of the ferry, remembering the dedication of the ferrymen and the central role that the ferry played in the life and growth of the town.
